The SMA Sunny Island 4548-US is an off-grid inverter that can be used completely off-grid in combination with Sunny Boy grid-tie inverters to have battery back up and access to the grid in the same PV system. The Sunny Island is a complete power center with a maximum efficiency of 96%.
The Sunny Island 5048-US provides 4500 Watts of sine wave output AC power of 120V at 60Hz. Two Sunny Island inverters can be wired together to provide 120/240V 60Hz split-phase output. Up to twelve Sunny Island inverters can be integrated into an off-grid system of up to 100 kW. The Sunny Island features an integrated battery disconnect, data monitoring and system control.
When the sunny island is connected as a grid-tie battery back up system, it will power up critical loads during utility grid blackouts. Combined with a Sunny Boy grid-tie inverter and a bank of batteries, the Sunny Island will allow your solar PV panels to power loads and charge the batteries. Under regular conditions, the power from your solar panels will be fed into the grid. During a power outage, the Sunny Island will supply your emergency loads with power from your battery bank.
In off-grid systems the Sunny Island will provide continuous reliable power for your loads. The high conversion efficiency will ensure that only the necessary power is drawn from your batteries. When solar power is desired for charging the the battery bank, a Sunny Boy needs to be paired to the system, eliminating the need for a charge controller. The battery bank can also be charged directly from the solar source using a charge controller. A generator can be connected to the Sunny Island to provide back-up battery charging.
The Sunny Island 4548-US is compatible with the SMA Sunny WebBox and SensorBox monitoring accessories. Conveniently, it also utilizes removable SD cards to store performance data from the integrated data logger. The Sunny Island 4548-US is UL Listed and comes with a standard 5-year warranty; warranty extensions are available.
SMA America is a pioneer in photovoltaics power conversion, they started in 1981 in Germany. Today they are the number one inverter manufacturer worldwide with a presence in 15 different countries, including the United States and Canada. In 2011 they opened the solar academy in California to help installers understand SMA’s technology and bring that knowledge to the home of thousand of homeowners in the US.
SMA staples include the Sunny Island inverters for off-grid and remote applications and the Sunny Boy inverters for residential and small commercial applications. In recent years they added the Tripower line of commercial inverters ranging from 12kW to 30kW per unit. Some of their inverters are assembled in Colorado and qualify for the ARRA Recovery Act. All their units are UL listed and comply with the most recent requirements in the National Electric Code (NEC).
SMA America has raised the bar in the solar industry for over 30 years and they continue to do so. They cover a wide range of applications and system sizes. The new inverter models for grid-tie applications come with multiple MPPT channels that will provide increased flexibility with your design and the length of you PV strings. This is a required feature when working with challenging roofs such as odd shapes or significant shading.
Additionally, SMA provides their Sunny Portal free of charge to SMA users. It is one of the most advanced energy communication platforms; all SMA inverters can transfer production data to the Sunny Portal. The portal is accessible to system owners via the internet, where they can view and monitor their system’s performance in great detail.
